Vulnerable groups, such as youth in conflict with the law, homeless individuals, and those in rehabilitation centers or incarcerated, face significant challenges in emotional healing, personal reflection, and reintegration into society. Many struggle with trauma, substance abuse, lack of education, and isolation, compounded by a lack of resources to access opportunities for growth. Current rehabilitation methods often fail to engage them effectively, limiting personal development and successful reintegration. There is a critical need for creative, innovative interventions that provide emotional and cognitive tools for self-reflection, healing, and empowerment.
our solution
Be the Salt and Light uses performing arts, specifically applied theatre, as a powerful medium for rehabilitation and therapy. This approach is impactful because it engages individuals in a creative, interactive way, allowing them to express themselves, process their emotions, and reflect on their experiences. Through storytelling, role-playing, and group activities, participants can build empathy, develop new perspectives, and gain emotional healing. The performing arts provide a safe space for self-expression, helping individuals reconnect with their emotions and fostering personal growth, which is essential for successful reintegration into society.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ)
Companies and funders can sponsor full or partial programmes in correctional facilities, rehab centres, shelters, or schools. Their support covers trained facilitators, materials, transport, and evaluation. Funders receive detailed reports and recognition (unless anonymity is preferred).
Our standard programme runs over 12 to 20 weeks, with bi-weekly sessions. We also offer condensed interventions (5 days) depending on the facility’s needs and the funding available.
We use Applied Theatre and Drama Therapy methods, including role-play, storytelling, movement, forum theatre, and playback theatre. These tools create safe spaces for reflection, healing, and transformation.
Currently, programmes are run in group settings that are pre-arranged with institutions and funded externally. Unfortunately, we do not offer individual sign-ups at this time.
Programmes are delivered on-site at rehabilitation centres, correctional facilities, shelters, and partner schools across the Western Cape. We tailor each session to the environment and the group’s specific context.
Each group typically includes a minimum 5 and maximum 10 participants to ensure personal engagement and psychological safety, while still allowing for meaningful interaction and ensemble work.
